How to Choose the Proper Shoes for Granny

Proper shoes means comfortable footwear that is safe to use while walking. It should not put the elder at risk for falling.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of death from fatal and non-fatal injuries.

Improving balance therefore  is important in reducing the risk of a fall.

According to Dr. Matthew Garoufalis, a podiatrist and past president of the American Podiatric Medical Assosciation (APMA), “proper footwear can help improve balance, especially in older people who may struggle with mobility and balance issues.”

The caregiver can assist  in choosing the right shoes for the elder. Here are some tips in getting the proper shoes:

  1. Look for wide shoes as this helps in maintaining balance,
  2. Choose low-heeled ones, that is, not more than an inch high.
  3. Check that the shoes has anti-skid soles.
  4. Run your fingers inside the shoes to feel for protruding material. The inside must be smooth and without cuts.
  5. Avoid choosing shoes with shoe laces as these may get untied while walking.
  6. Let the elder try and walk with the shoes on. There must not be any discomfort while walking.

Remember getting the right shoes for the elder means the elder can move about with less risk of fall.
